What's in a name?
ThinThread was a secretive program developed by Bill Binney at the National Security Agency (NSA) in the 1990s to track terrorist activity and threats while protecting the privacy of American citizens. Unlike other programs at the time, ThinThread focused on using strong encryption to keep data about U.S. citizens safe, only allowing it to be accessed with legal permission. It also used advanced technology to analyze vast amounts of communication data, like emails and phone calls, to identify patterns related to terrorism. Despite its potential, ThinThread was shut down after 9/11 in favour of more aggressive programs that didn't have the same privacy protections, leading some to argue that the U.S. missed a chance to balance security with privacy.
